This chart was invaluable at the parts counter when it was current and, admittedly, I have been using it during the creations of posts. Be sure to check out the footnotes including on page three with the overview of the model prefixes (ZX/KZ/ZL,..). One explanation that seems to be missing is the definition of the "/L" on most of the street bikes from 1984 and later. The added "/L" indicates a unit capable of being sold in the California market. They were of course still sold in other states. I cannot speak beyond Michigan but it was not uncommon to get in a semi load of crates and find that one or two were marked with the "L" (e.g.: VN750-A5L).
See a machine from before 1978 that you are not familiar with? Visit www.kawatriple.com using the following link where you can download the 1963 - 1978 Model Recognition Manual. (please advise if link becomes inactive) The kawatriple site also has loads of other useful information.

A watercraft chronology chart similar to this is coming next.
Thanks for looking. Gary / kawasaki-yama-zuki
