For as long as I can remember we have referred to it as the "interchange book" and kept on a shelf away from the parts counter. After it was outdated for use as a price book we have used it for two basic purposes. First, if you have an old Kaw part number this book tells the basic model(s) that it fits or fit when it was first introduced. Second, there are three notes a part might have "SUB, REP, and I/C." My interpretation of this is SUB=can substitute for, REP=replaces, and I/C=interchanges with. Something like this anyway.
While using this book the other day for a side cover that I sold on eBay I happened to open to a page that I do not recall ever looking at. It has part numbers for engine assemblies for all of our favorite old Kaws. Beyond that a lot of them have "Pick Locations" meaning these were items they kept in stock. Imagine it is 1980 and you can order a new engine assembly for a 1973 Z1 900 $1500 or for the 1978 KZ1000-D1 Z1R for $2595. They are in pick location NG10. Well, they were anyway.
Yes, there have been other ways to check the application of parts for a long time--Kaw Model Application microfiche set, and of course other options in the computer/internet era. This book is from before that and that makes it interesting to me.
Other pages can be posted. Maybe in the future I will photo the pages with fenders, tanks, and side covers. It is hundreds of pages so the whole book won't likely be done.
What caught your eye? Post it below.
Thanks for looking. Gary / kawasaki-yama-zuki
